Khama Rhino Sanctuary
Community based wildlife project providing a habitat for
white and black rhino and many other wildlife and bird species.
Visitor activities in the sanctuary include ranger-guided game drives in
sanctuary vehicles, self-drive map-guided tours, nature walks, rhino tracking
excursions, and educational tours for local schools.
Overnight accommodations are available in
8 cottages, shared-room dormatory lodging with
bunk beds that can accommodate up to 48 people,
and 22 camp sites including camps for large groups.
Other facilities in the sanctuary include a restaurant and bar,
picnic tables, a curio-shop, and a multi-purpose hall.
The Khama Rhino Sanctuary was stablished in 1992 to assist in saving the vanishing rhinoceros,
restore an area formerly teeming with wildlife to its previous natural state,
and provide economic benefits to the local Botswana community through
tourism and the sustainable use of natural resources.
Located about 25 kilometers northwest of the town
of Serowe, Botswana.
Nata Bird Sanctuary
Bird sanctuary in the Makgadikgadi Pans area that is
approximately 230 square kilometers in size, with
55% being land are and 45% beign pan surface.
The annual rains fill the sanctuary's pans with overflow from
the Nata River, attracting thousands of birds to nest
and breed every year. Birds can be observed from a viewing
platform next to the pan and there is a campsite near the
Sanctuary Gatehouse, about 15 kilometers south of Nata.
There are 4 camping areas with shade and views across
grassland toward the edge of the pan.
Modisa Wildlife Project
Offers opportunities for Botswana visitors to volunteer
for periods lasting from 2 weeks to 3 months. Volunteers
will experience close encounters with wildlife, nature,
and the local people. Activities include a mix of
safari excursions, lectures, and assisting with the
day-to-day work of the project. Volunteers pay prices
from $1300 for 2 weeks to $2,300 per month that include
food, lodging, and activities.
